Cannabis & The Body
Research pertaining to Cannabis and it’s various Cannabinoids, Terpenes, and potential benefits is still ongoing due to much of its scientific progress being halted in the 1970’s during the “War on Drugs” and unfortunately was not revived in full until recent years post-legalization. Today, there are many exciting research initiatives being taken to learn more about Cannabis, to break down the remaining stigma that lingers, and provide alternatives for consumers trying to find relief from a multitude of symptoms.
Some of the exciting research specific to Women’s Health includes using THC and CBD combinations to aid in alleviating Menstrual Cramps, Nausea, Bloating, Headaches, Dysmenorrhea, Anxiety, Insomnia, Depression, PTSD, Sexual Arousal and Response, Chronic Pain, and many others. As with most medical research, there is a lack of studies being conducted on female participants, but there is hope as more and more women advocate for scientific data pertaining to cannabis related sex differences.
Fun Fact: A study from Washington State University in 2014 found that female rats are at least 30% more sensitive than males to the pain-relieving qualities of THC, they believe this is due to estrogen levels. Wakley, A. A., Wiley, J. L., & Craft, R. M. (2014). Sex differences in antinociceptive tolerance to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in the rat. Drug and alcohol dependence, 143, 22-28.
